Checkout JoeJoesoft he has created this great tool called 'Rename Master'.

I was dreading the uploading of all the avatars and i wanted to rename them to one make them more organized and two to limit the filename size for display purposes. So did a small google search for file renaming tools and I found this website and download the tool. In about 3-4 mins of playing around I figured out the tool and converted all my 400 files in a matter of 4 mins. This would have taken my a few hours doing it by hand.

Great program and best of all it's free.
